Gorse Street & Wesley Street, Blackburn
Part of United Utilities larger Blackburn UID’s scheme Donegan were awarded this project which would resolve 2 separate unsatisfactory discharges into the River Darwen.
The resultant work would ensure that the new Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) chambers would comply with the Environmental Agency requirement to reduce the number of spills per year and screen any spills.
Work at Gorse Street included construction of a large reinforced concrete CSO chamber around an existing 1200mm sewer, complete with powered screen, 150m of opencut pipework ranging from 600-1200mm diameter, manhole chambers ranging from 1800-2700mm diameter, 300mm diameter augerbore underneath Gorse Street approx 20m length and a new reinforced concrete outfall structure.
The scope of works at Wesley Street the smaller of the two sites involved the construction of a small reinforced CSO chamber around both an existing surface water and foul water sewer, complete with static screen, a reinforced concrete diversion manhole and interconnecting 225mm opencut pipework.
