A19 Silverlink, North Shields
Client: Highways England.
Principal Contractor: Sisk Lagan JV
Value: Circa £250K.
Project Background:
Highways England undertook the scheme to reduce peak time congestion on the A19 arterial road running north to south from the Tyne Tunnel and the A1058 Coast Road from Newcastle. The scheme included the realignment of A19 under the existing A19 roundabout and the construction of new slip roads.
Scope of Works
The scope of the works for V.J. Donegan was to undertake the construction of 2nr 4500mm and 1nr 6000mm internal diameter caisson shafts to be used for 1200mm diameter micro tunnel pipe jacks as part of the drainage works for the scheme.
All 3 shafts were sunk from the top down using either concrete or steel cutting edges and a hydraulic shaft jacking system.
Upon reaching formation level, the shafts were grouted, caulked and the mass concrete plugs cast as per the construction drawings.
Project Start Date / Completion Date
V.J. Donegan were mobilised to site in December 2017 and the works were completed in early April 2018, at total of 8 weeks longer than programmed due to design changes increasing the scope of the works, adverse weather conditions closing the site for a prolonged period and delayed access to the work areas.
